No it doesn't lower your self esteem. You just get a lot more spam than usual. Spam not as adverts, but as pointless stuff your friends post.
As for the picture thing, most people put up only their best photos and only write the good stuff. Also some people even lie on facebook.

And in reality they are at home for the weekends, searching for celebrity news and pretending to be on a fabulous euro-trip XD XD XD
You don't see anyone putting selfies of them wasted, getting picked up by the cops XD
So don't be bothered with what people post. Use facebook as a communication tool. As for the friend delete thing, maybe they didn't know it was you. Tell 'em you got a fb.
