Yeah, you are lucky you never got charged with assault with a weapon. Maybe he didn't report you because of all the bad things he had done to you. Perhaps guilt kept him quiet.
This reminds me a bit of when children who are physically punished well into their teenage years by their parents. Some of those kids end up hitting back and it effectively ends the physical abuse. The abusive parent is stunned enough by the retaliation that they stop. Although it may put an end to the violence, it doesn't solve the underlying issues. Nobody walks away from it feeling any better, even though there is some relief for the child----they still have to mentally cope with the fact that they hit their parent.

I did that to my mom once when she smacked my hand. She got real mad.
